在文化强国战略背景下，科学普及与科技创新同等重要。语言服务是中外交流合作的桥梁，也是促进科学普及交流互鉴的重要支持。优质的语言服务能够有效推动国家吸收国际优秀地质科普知识，进而提升我国在地质科学领域的学术实力与国际竞争力。地质科普类文本的译介不仅可以丰富读者的地质知识，还有助于促进国内地质学科的发展以及与国际地质研究的交流，是科学普及工作中不可或缺的一环。

本翻译实践报告所选文本为Geopedia: A Brief Compendium of Geologic Curiosities（《地质百科：地质珍奇简编》）中的“岩石与矿物”和“地质学史”两个条目。该书作为地质科普读物，以专业的方式图文并茂地传播知识，具有很强的目的性。由于翻译目的论强调翻译目的对翻译策略选择的决定作用，并且注重译文在目的语语境下的可读性，适用于目的性较强的非文学类文本翻译，因此译者以目的论为此次翻译实践的理论指导。本翻译实践报告以目的论三原则为指导，从词汇、句法和语篇角度探讨了此次地质科普类文本在汉译过程中出现的问题及解决方法。在词汇层面上，运用目的性原则和忠实性原则，采用意译和直译加注处理地质学专业术语、外来语及惯用语；在句法层面上，结合目的论三原则，通过重组、分译、合译和语态转换等方法保留原文的逻辑与意义，提高译文的可读性；在篇章层面上，以目的性原则和连贯性原则为核心，通过增补使译文在衔接与连贯上更符合目的语读者的阅读习惯。此次翻译实践丰富了地质科普类文本的实践经验，以期为同类型文本翻译提供参考和借鉴。

In the context of building China into a strong culture power, the promotion of scientific knowledge is deemed as equally crucial as fostering technological innovation. Language services act as a bridge to international collaboration, facilitating the exchange and mutual learning in scientific dissemination. High-quality language services play a pivotal role in enabling the absorption of outstanding global geological knowledge, consequently bolstering China’s academic endeavors in the field of geology and enhancing its international competitiveness. The translation of geological popular science texts not only enriches readers’ geological knowledge but also promotes the development of domestic geology disciplines and facilitates communication with international geological research, constituting an indispensable component of science outreach efforts.

The selected text for this translation practice report come from Geopedia: A Brief Compendium of Geologic Curiosities, focusing on the entries “Rocks and Minerals” and “History of Geology”. This monograph, serving as a popular science publication in geology, adeptly disseminates knowledge in a professional and visually engaging manner, demonstrating a clear purpose. The Skopos Theory highlights the critical influence of translation purpose on translation strategy, and also focuses on the readability of the translation in the target language context, making it particularly applicable to non-literary texts with clear objectives. Hence, the translator adopts Skopos Theory as the theoretical guidance for this translation practice. This translation practice report is guided by the three principles of Skopos Theory, examining the issues and solutions in the translation process of geoscience popular science texts from lexical, syntactic, and textual perspectives. At the lexical level, a combination of the Skopos Principle and Fidelity Principle is employed, using methods of paraphrasing, literal translation and annotations to handle geological specialized terminology, Greek origin words, and cultural-loaded words; at the syntactic level, a fusion of the three principles of Skopos Theory is applied through methods such as voice transformation, division, combination, transplanting and rewriting to maintain the logic and meaning of the original text, enhancing the readability of the translation; at the discourse level, applying Skopos Principle and Coherence Principle through amplification ensures that the translation is better aligned with the reading habits of the target language readers. This translation practice enriches the practical experience of translating geoscience popular science texts, aiming to provide reference and guidance for similar text translations.
