在西方，启蒙思想可以看作是现代化的开端，西方社会也是在经历了启蒙运动的“洗礼”后，终于步入 现代社会，而在中国的现代化进程中，20世纪的启蒙运动却遭遇了一次次社会政治事件的强行干预和阻挡， 至今中国的启蒙任务还远远没有完成。为了更好的推进中国的现代化进程，酝酿新世纪中国的启蒙运动，首 先就要明确人的现代化与社会的现代化之间的关系。同时，还要看到，人的现代化又与启蒙有着密切的联系。 正是在启蒙的基础上，西方社会才第一次完成了人的现代化，拥有现代人格的大量现代人的出现，正预示着 西方世界进入理性时代，进入了现代社会，而在中国正是由于启蒙现代性的匮乏，才滞缓了中国现代化的进 程。 在中国语境里，启蒙是中国未竟之事业。当代中国虽然社会经济等各个方面都发生了翻天覆地的变化， 但是启蒙现在在中国仍然是必需的，也是可能的，启蒙所包含的如自由、平等、民主、理性、法治、人权等 内容以及由这些现代精神而凸显的西方社会最本质的文化精神即反思，批判和质疑，正是这种独特的文化精 神推动了西方社会由前现代、现代、后现代之路上一步步的走向未来.中国的启蒙就是要获得现代意识中最 本质的精神支撑——反思、批判、质疑，并在此基础上逐步形成了现代社会的理性、民主、自由，法治等理 念，从而使中国自身的思想文化获得能够推动自己不断改造、发展、进步的动力和源泉。在启蒙时代，我们 要不断的塑造、培养人们自由、平等、博爱、理性、科学、民主、法治等观念，但又不能完全放弃前现代社 会所留给我们的优秀传统文化，我们所要做的就是不断的对它进行改造和现代转型，使其适应现代社会的 要求，并使它成为中国新的启蒙运动的重要思想来源。启蒙在西方发达国家已经出现了文化危机，走向“ 启蒙的自我毁灭”， 但是，在中国的启蒙语境中，现代性本质上“不在场”或尚未生成。面对后现代主 义的冲击，我们要站在现代社会的基点上来实现启蒙时代的现代性，这是我们一直要坚守的立足点。现代 性被认为是与资本主义天然的结合在一起的，但我国对启蒙现代性的追求，却是要通过社会主义道路来实 现的。自改革开放以后，我国正在对传统社会主义模式进行根本性改革，努力把现代性与社会主义结合起 来，力图探索出一套社会主义的新模式。市场经济是塑造、培养具有现代意识公民的经济环境和社会土壤， 它和启蒙之间是相互包容、相互配合的关系，两者都是实现人的现代化的重要途径和手段，因此，完善、 发达的市场经济可以为启蒙现代性的实现提供良好的社会经济环境。匮缺自由主义现代性赖以生长的欧美 式市民社会的土壤是中国数次启蒙运动失败的基本原因。因此，一个成熟、强大的市民社会的存在，才能 为启蒙现代性的在中国的确立奠定良好的阶级社会基础。反省以往的启蒙运动时，我们总能看到实用主义、 功利主义倾向是其共同的特点，今天，要真正实现启蒙现代性在中国的确立，启蒙者就要以客观、公正、 平和的态度来对待中西各自的文化和启蒙本身，这也是新启蒙实现的主观因素。总之，要对当代中国的启 蒙时代性有个正确的分析，要在这样一个由七个基本问题所构成的完整、严谨的启蒙框架下来酝酿、实施 启蒙，那么启蒙现代性在中国的生成将成为可能。
