Fossil fuels have long served as the primary driver of human societal development, yet their drawbacks and hazards are increasingly apparent, posing challenges to achieving “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality” goals. In order to know more about how to optimize energy structure and guide the public in changing energy consumption behaviors, etc., the translator chose the best-selling book FOSSIL FUTURE: Why Global Human Flourishing Requires More Oil, Coal, and Natural Gas — Not Less by American philosopher and energy expert Alex Epstein as the source text for this translation practice. Oriented by the issues encountered in the practice and guided by the Information Theory, methods were chosen to address these issues. The practice has not only enhanced the translator’s translation skills but also delved into and shared discussions in the source text regarding the importance and impact of fossil fuels. This practice report will introduce the content, translation process, and the application of the Information Theory in the practice. The fourth chapter is the focal point of this practice report, where, guided by the Information Theory, the translator analyzed the issues arising from differences in language habits and expressions between English and Chinese, differences in cultural backgrounds between the two countries, or readers’ limited grasp of scientific information. It is identified that due to the relatively narrow audience channel capacity, there is a tendency for the transmission load to exceed the target language audience’s channel capacity, and information also exhibits discreteness in the transmission process, inevitably leading to loss and deviation. Therefore, the translator adopted a problem-oriented approach focusing on information redundancy and information discreteness, and correspondingly employed three strategies of amplification, omission, and conversion. Using the selected sentences from FOSSIL FUTURE and their corresponding translations as examples, the report will explore how to align the transmission load with the channel capacity. Finally, the translator recognized that this practice had expanded the exposure to translation material categories, enhanced translation skills, and identified issues such as inflexible tool selection and less engaging language compared to the original work, concluding the translation practice. |
